Wine buffs – or bluffs?, 21-1-2011

Wine buffs – or bluffs?

Readers may remember the TV quiz show Call My Bluff, chaired by the inimitable Robert Robinson, in which one panel provided three definitions for an outlandish, but perfectly genuine word, from which their opponents had to choose the true one.
Well, we recently staged our own wine-based version as a fundraising event for Nyewood Village Hall. The audience were given a wine to taste, then a panel offered four different descriptions of the wine’s origins, only one of which was genuine. The panel entered fully into the spirit of things, presenting completely contradictory and fanciful information with great gusto and absolute conviction.
We gave the audience six wines to taste; no one managed to guess more than three correctly…the evening was a great success, and we’ll be holding another similar event soon; more details nearer the time.

SAY IT WITH MORE THAN JUST FLOWERS THIS VALENTINE’S DAY!

Hampshire Wine Shippers (HWS) has teamed up with two Petersfield florists to offer customers a range of wines to accompany their flowers this Valentine’s Day.

HWS has taken out temporary event licences at Bonica (15 High Street) and The Blacksmith’s Daughter (29 Chapel Street) which allows them to sell rosé, sparkling white and Champagne specially selected for the occasion by HWS owner David Howarth.

There’s a wine to suit every taste and budget. At the lower end of the price spectrum is the excellent Comte d’Ormont Blanc de Blancs, a sparkling white made by top winemaker Guy Saget in Pouilly sur Loire. In the mid-range are two superb Provencal rosés, while for the ultimate romantic treat, there’s HWS’s ‘house’ Champagne, Ludovic David Brut, at £19.99 a bottle.

“Most people can manage a bunch of flowers or box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day, but picking out a wine for the love of your life can be a rather trickier decision,” says David. “Our aim is to help people choose a wine with confidence, whether it’s for a romantic dinner at home, or to give as a gift. On an occasion like this, you need to be sure that the wine is going to be good; we’ve been in the business for over 25 years, so customers can trust us to come up with something special.”

All the wines are also available direct from HWS.
